Frits are essentlally a fragmentary form of glass and constitute the main component of glazes. They are produced by mixing various raw materials in powdered form and introducing them into special frit kilns where they decompose, interact and are transformed into viscous liquid masses. They are cooled rapidly using water or air, at which point they take on the form fo granules or vitreous flakes. When mixed with other frits and/or with suitables quantities of mom-vitritied raw materials, a frit is generally capable of remelting and incorporating the added components into its structure to form a homogeneous glass with different characteristics from those at the outset. This property makes it possible to create a large number of different glazes from a limited number of frits and raw materials.
